Situated on the Golden, Colorado campus of the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, the 220,000 sf Research Support Facility is a showcase office building demonstrating that highly efficient, large scale buildings can be both aesthetically pleasing and cost-competitive.  The certified LEED-NC Platinum project is considered one of the most energy efficient buildings of its scale in the world and is on target to operate at a net-zero energy consumption annually.

 

Lost Creek Cabin

 

3,500 sf residence located in a high snow and seismic region.  The residence is located on private lands surrounded by Grand Teton National Park and features expansive views of the surrounding landscape. 

 

University of Colorado Kittredge Central Residence Hall and Commons

 

97,000 sf new residence hall featuring 265 beds adn a state of the art commons area including a full range of learning spaces as well as retail and lounge areas.

 

One Steamboat Place

 

One Steamboat Place is mixed-use luxury residential and retail development at the base of Mount Werner, next to Steamboat Ski Company’s main gondola building. Shadow Array Sculpture at DIA

 

This large scale public art piece adorns the new light rail terminal at the south terminal redevelopment of the Denver International Airport.  The piece consists of a regular march of cantilevered logs along both embankments of the terminal approach.  Progressive changes in cantilever length lends a dynamic interest to the piece as passengers arrive by train.  Colorado beatle-kill logs are a primary source of material.

Windsor Mill

 

Windsor Mill is a 4 story brick and heavy timber building with stone foundations that was built in the late 1800’s. It was damaged by a tornado in 2008. The approximate square footage is 26,000, and the scope will include rebuilding the 3rd and 4th floor, as well as updating the foundations for a full basement. The planned use for the building is a mix of restaurant, brewery, bar, and general office. It is a historic building.

Time Piece

 

This stainless steel arch with working street clocks marks the entry of the El Monte transit center outside of Los Angeles.  The cast aluminum clocks were given a steel pipe skeleton to withstand tension forces from the array of supporting cables.

 

Willow Grove

 

Telescoping bundles of pipes create a light-tipped steel forest along Broadway in Jackson, Wyoming.  Speed of installation was key to maintaining a tight budget.  To that end, concrete footings were precast at the artist's studio in Washington state prior to shipping to Wyoming.

 

Birth of the NFL

 

This public art piece is located in Canton, Ohio and commemorates the frontier of the NFL.  It is composed of carbon and stainless steel as well as dichroic glass.

 

Battle of Wills

 

This western themed bronze is part of a larger redevelopment at the Jackson Hole Airport in Wyoming.  The unbalanced composition of the 4000 pound sculpture creates the illusion of action.  Weight of the cantilevered mass is countered by a large mass of concrete below the landscape.  To achieve adequate strength, the thin legs are composed of solid cast stainless steel forms.

 

Gillette College Student Housing

 

50,000 sf 3-story dormitory with dining hall/cafeteria for 250 people.

 

Colorado Rocky Mountain School

 

3 building school complex with a faculty duplex, lodge and base camp.

 

Ginger and Baker

 

A restaurant and pie bakery addition to an existing, historical feed and grain building.  New building will be approximately 12,300 sf with two floors and a basement.

 

Teton House

 

A single family residence with a guest house that is accessible by a steel foot bridge.  Total square footage approximately 9,300.

 

Edelson Residence

 

6,000 sf single family residence with three wings, one of which has an upper level.  Home has mostly wood-framed floors, a mix of wood and steel for the roof, and exposed structural steel columns and steel bents.

 

Eagle River Fire and Police Station

 

24,000 sf combined fire and police station serving the Eagle River Fire Protection District and the Town of Avon Police Department 

 

Drawing Room

 

This comical portrait studio of sorts is constructed from 5/16 inch thick carved plate, small pipe edge stiffeners, and large pipe supports.  It provides a gathering point for visitors to a new light rail stop in Mesa, Arizona.  The cone reflects hundreds of portrait cut-outs based on photographs from local towns people.

Water, steel, and glass form a prominent entry to the National Center for Civil and Human Rights in Atlanta.

 

Utep Pickaxe

 

This sculpture at the University of Texas of El Paso commemorates both the mining history and embrace of digital technology at the school.  The pre-rusted slain clads the cantilevered steel structure within.

 

Georgia O’Keefe Elementary School

 

80,000 sf school featuring several cantilevered floor and roof areas, large two-story clerestory cafeteria, multiple roof planes and varied slopes, and several large canopies

 

Crandall Building Remodel/Addition

 

The project consists of a 2,500 sf penthouse on the top of the historic Crandall Building.  The remodel/addition to the Crandall Building brought the 1970's building up to 21st century standards while keeping the essence of the building that was originally designed by artist and architect Thomas W. Benton.

 

The Glacier House

 

10,000 sf composite steel framed residence with expressed stainless steel structural features.

 

Three Trees

 

15,000 sf private residence located on a steeply sloping site with spectacular views of the surrounding valley.  The residence is constructed using composite steel framing and features extensive use of architectural concrete.

Carbondale Recreation Center

 

11,000 sf sustainably designed recreation facility for the town of Carbondale.  LEED BD+C Platinum certified.

 

Elk Camp Gondola

 

The on mountain restaurant is located at the top of the gondola and is the first phase of a building that will eventually be the base for outdoor sports and special events.  The building includes a 250 seat restaurant, 1,500 sf of skier services and conference space.  Anticpated LEED Gold.

Northern Colorado Medical Center Office, Building One

 

The 75,000 sf Medical office building is the second of five buildings Hensel Phelps Construction Company and the design team are working on as part of Greeley's Northern Colorado Medical Center Campus.  The building houses an urgent care center, pharmacy, imaging facility, blood draw unit and private medical offices.  In addition to the structural steel design, KL&A provided steel construction services including construction management, steel detailing, steel fabrication and steel erection.  

 

St. Joseph's Hospital & Health Center

 

3 Buildings, Hospital is 74,000 sf, 1 story: MOB is 17,000 sf with the lower level being an outpatient surgery center: CUP is 10,000 sf utility building

 

Robert Hoag Rawlings Public Library

 

This downtown Pueblo, Colorado project incorporates the reinforced concrete frame structure of the former library into a steel and exposed architectural concrete building.  Structural challenges included a 3-story bridge that spans Bates Lane, cantilevered monumental stairs, and the wafer thin cantilevered 45-ft trellis at the south end of the building.

This 68,000 sf project consists of new medical offices, a new emergency medical services entrance and a new lobby/administration area for the Fort Morgan Hospital.  Work also consisted of relocation and/or construction of MRI facilities and x-ray services.  The project was carefully scheduled to avoid interrupting day to day operations of the facility.  

 

Animas Surgery Center and RiverGate Medical Campus

 

Built along the banks of the Animas River, the Rivergate Medical Campus and Animas Surgical Hospital will accommodate the premier health care facilities for the Four Corners region.
