National Renewable Energy Laboratories Research Support Facilities Building

 

Situated on the Golden, Colorado campus of the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, the 220,000 sf Research Support Facility is a showcase office building demonstrating that highly efficient, large scale buildings can be both aesthetically pleasing and cost-competitive.  The certified LEED-NC Platinum project is considered one of the most energy efficient buildings of its scale in the world and is on target to operate at a net-zero energy consumption annually.

Robert Hoag Rawlings Public Library

 

This downtown Pueblo, Colorado project incorporates the reinforced concrete frame structure of the former library into a steel and exposed architectural concrete building.  Structural challenges included a 3-story bridge that spans Bates Lane, cantilevered monumental stairs, and the wafer thin cantilevered 45-ft trellis at the south end of the building.

Question Mark

 

This piece punctuates the grand opening of the newly renovated main branch of the Madison Public Library.

 

Source

 

A renovation included significant interior modifications for a tenant build out to accommodate an "open-air market" concept.  The renovation efforts included strengthening the existing structure and providing new mezzanine levels for future occupants.  Tenant spaces were delineated with exposed cold form stud framing and the front facade was modified to accommodate large, glazed, operable doors.    

 

Rzeka Live/Work

 

Six building complex with fifteen two to three story Live/Work units with tuck under parking. The structure is wood panelized construction on concrete grade beams supported by a helical pier foundation system. 

 

Freight

 

28,000 sf, mixed-use building is a remodel of a former freight terminal. It is located in the Taxi development of the Denver Rhino district.

Windsor Mill

 

Windsor Mill is a 4 story brick and heavy timber building with stone foundations that was built in the late 1800’s. It was damaged by a tornado in 2008. The approximate square footage is 26,000, and the scope will include rebuilding the 3rd and 4th floor, as well as updating the foundations for a full basement. The planned use for the building is a mix of restaurant, brewery, bar, and general office. It is a historic building.

Built along the banks of the Animas River, the Rivergate Medical Campus and Animas Surgical Hospital will accommodate the premier health care facilities for the Four Corners region.

 

Northern Colorado Medical Center Office, Building One

 

The 75,000 sf Medical office building is the second of five buildings Hensel Phelps Construction Company and the design team are working on as part of Greeley's Northern Colorado Medical Center Campus.  The building houses an urgent care center, pharmacy, imaging facility, blood draw unit and private medical offices.  In addition to the structural steel design, KL&A provided steel construction services including construction management, steel detailing, steel fabrication and steel erection.

After 30 years of incoporation, Snowmass has a town hall. The 23,000 sf building was designed to blend in with the surrounding area and houses council chambers, the police department, and office space.

Telescoping bundles of pipes create a light-tipped steel forest along Broadway in Jackson, Wyoming.  Speed of installation was key to maintaining a tight budget.  To that end, concrete footings were precast at the artist's studio in Washington state prior to shipping to Wyoming.

Shadow Array Sculpture at DIA

 

This large scale public art piece adorns the new light rail terminal at the south terminal redevelopment of the Denver International Airport.  The piece consists of a regular march of cantilevered logs along both embankments of the terminal approach.  Progressive changes in cantilever length lends a dynamic interest to the piece as passengers arrive by train.  Colorado beatle-kill logs are a primary source of material.

 

Time Piece

 

This stainless steel arch with working street clocks marks the entry of the El Monte transit center outside of Los Angeles.  The cast aluminum clocks were given a steel pipe skeleton to withstand tension forces from the array of supporting cables.

The Doerr-Hosier Center, the new conference center at The Aspen Institute, earned a LEED Green Building Gold Rating.  The 22,000 sf building was constructed using low-impact materials, making the most of natural lighting and devising a geothermal reflecting pool to heat and cool the building.

Battle of Wills

 

This western themed bronze is part of a larger redevelopment at the Jackson Hole Airport in Wyoming.  The unbalanced composition of the 4000 pound sculpture creates the illusion of action.  Weight of the cantilevered mass is countered by a large mass of concrete below the landscape.  To achieve adequate strength, the thin legs are composed of solid cast stainless steel forms.

Celebrating the 200th Anniversary of Saint Paul Cathedral in Boston, the piece is a new look to the building's previously unadorned pediment.  The piece is composed of aluminum furring, aluminum composite panels, and hand-formed aluminum representing the cross section of a nautilus shell.  The coating system and shape of the formed pieces mimics stone tracery found in Gothic cathedral architecture.
